At the end of the last school year I made a promise to myself that I would begin to teach mindset in a meaningful and memorable way. My school had been trained in mindset and done a book study of “Mindset” by Carol Dweck about three years ago, and the ideas really stuck with me.
It was Friday afternoon. Kindergarten in January: need I say more? I was tired and my students were wired.
Sometimes the universe sends you exactly what you need. This was certainly the case in the middle of my second year as an elementary principal, when I was defeated and day dreaming of other career paths, and happened to stumble into a Growing Early Mindsets™ workshop facilitated by GEM author Dr. Kendra Coates.
When Kim Zeugner’s fifth grade math students walk into her classroom on the first day of school, they’re going to notice something posted in the corner of the whiteboard: photographs of a broken-down school bus, covered in rust and forest growth, with the invitation to “Take a ride on the struggle bus... and GROW your brain!”
When I think of phenomenal educators, Griselda Rutherford, a teacher in Washington D.C., comes to mind. I met Griselda while facilitating a Growth Mindset Live Training workshop in her school district. Griselda took to the growth mindset, as she believes that all students are capable of remarkable growth, and began the work at her school.
